What are VR glasses?

VR glasses are headsets that allow you to immerse yourself in virtual reality. Glasses consist of a relatively large rectangular plastic case in which the necessary technology is installed. The main components of VR glasses are two lenses. In interaction with two separate screens from the image source, they create a 3D image that gives the viewer the impression not only of seeing the image or movie, but of being right in the middle of the action.

Head tracking adapts the image to the movement of your head, so there is almost no difference from the real world. In order for images, movies or games to be played back by such glasses, you need additional hardware as the image source. Depending on the VR glasses, this hardware consists of a smartphone, a modern PlayStation, or a high-end computer.

How do VR glasses work?

Our eyes are able to see the environment in three dimensions. This is made possible by the interaction of the left and right eyes. The effect of this so-called stereoscopic or double eye vision is based on the fact that the two eyes perceive fixed objects slightly differently. The left eye sees more of the left side of the subject, while the right eye sees more of the right side of the subject.

You can easily test the stereoscopic vision effect yourself. First, fixate on an object and then gently close both eyes.
