History of computer monitors: from terminal to flat screen

27 inch monitors

In the early days of computers, there were no monitors as you know them today. There is no such model, like a mouse or keyboard. Input and output exclusively via punch cards. Then, a printer is used to visualize the results, which realizes the output through continuous paper. The first computer terminals only appeared in the early 1970s.

The first typical representatives of such a terminal were the IBM 3280 terminal and the VT100 terminal. This eliminates detours through the punch card system. The terminal can be used to communicate directly with the computer. The first monitors used in these terminals were white, green, or orange monochrome monitors that had 80 or 132 characters per line and could display a total of 24 to 43 characters.

Existing TV screen technology was used for the first home computers in the late 1970s and early 1980s. With the help of a modulator, this television can be used with the C64, Amiga 500 or other comparable devices. Dedicated computer monitors are much better in terms of display, but they are also much more expensive. Over time, computers have become increasingly sophisticated, including at home. This causes TV and monitor technology to become increasingly separate. There has been little progress to report in the TV sector over the decades.

Only in recent years have these two techniques become increasingly similar. Today it is no longer a problem to connect a modern game console or Blu-ray player to a computer monitor; the same thing naturally happens the other way around.

The first flat screens appeared around 2000. The old tube technology is disappearing. On the one hand, monitors are becoming more space efficient and, on the other hand, more energy efficient. Nowadays, operating a computer with multiple screens is no longer a problem at all.

Basic questions before buying: What do you want to use the monitor for?

This question sounds rhetorical at first: Of course you want to use a monitor to display computer graphics signals. But it makes sense to answer this question as precisely as possible. There are several application areas. It depends on what you actually want to do with the computer:
  • Surf the Internet, office work at home
With this application area, you are sure to have the lowest demands on your new monitor. Models from the lower price segment are usually sufficient here. However, with one limitation: If you spend more than an hour a day in front of the computer, you should make sure that it is a flicker-free model as possible. Otherwise, your eyes will tire quickly. Working on a flashing monitor for long periods of time can also cause headaches. Another important point with office monitors is ergonomics. As such, how well the device looks when it's turned off should play a secondary role in your choice. The screen must be properly adjusted to allow for good sitting posture. If you cannot or do not want to mount the monitor with a wall bracket, the base of the device must be very flexible. In other words: you must be able to tilt the screen in any direction and it must be height-adjustable. Not all monitors on the market offer this luxury.

The so-called pivot function is interesting: it allows you to rotate the screen up. This way, for example, the pages in a word processing document can be displayed as a whole without compromising the aspect ratio.
  • Play computer games
There are also clear boundaries to this topic: Do you just want to play casual games? These are the so-called games where there are no very fast movements, such as in a deck of cards. Or should it be the latest first-person shooter? Here you are dealing with high-quality graphics, fast motion, and incredible color depth. If the latter is the case, you should definitely aim for the shortest possible response time. Note that, which is specified in milliseconds. We have listed affordable gaming monitors in our comparison, the response time should not exceed 1 to 2 milliseconds. Reaction time avoids streak effect. Images adapt very quickly to animations and video sequences. Another deciding factor in a gaming monitor is the maximum resolution. But remember: the higher the resolution, the more powerful the graphics engine. The best monitor with the highest resolution won't help you if your computer's graphics card doesn't keep up. Or if the interaction between the processor, graphics card, and memory components is not working.

The gaming monitor is clearly recognizable in its design. Many manufacturers customize their models in this area for users. Interesting color schemes like black and red combinations are the most common. Since keyboards, mice, and computer cases are also stylish for gamers, such designs are very important to the end customer and a distinguishing feature of a good gaming monitor.
  • Watching movies
Do you mainly use your computer to watch high definition movies? Then your monitor must also meet special requirements. But it also doesn't matter, in this case, the size of the monitor in relation to the distance between the device and the user is very important. And resolution also plays a major role. There are currently only a few monitors on the market that don't shine with a Full HD 1,920 x 1,080 pixels resolution, regardless of size. That's enough to enjoy DVD or Blu-ray in full resolution. If this is a 4k movie, the monitor must support the appropriate resolution.
  • Video and image editing
Anyone looking to edit images, photos or videos in a semi-professional or professional field won't be too pleased with our selection of comparisons. You should then look at the high price segment. The work in this job profile is specifically about color fastness. Blue is not the same as blue. If you have two or more monitors, you can confirm this relatively quickly. Colors must look real. Therefore, a monitor is needed that can make the necessary settings. There are devices specifically designed to scale such monitors. If you want to use multiple monitors, they must always be the same model from the same company.
  • Expand monitor
Especially in the professional field, you may no longer be able to get by with one monitor. Maybe they want to write and do research on the internet at the same time. You don't want your browser window to be a window all the time hidden by a word processor - and vice versa. In such cases, multiple monitors are an adequate solution. It can be positioned and arranged as desired, the desktop is expanded For example, you have a word processor on the left monitor and an Internet browser on the right device. You can easily navigate from one monitor to another with the mouse pointer. Modern operating systems and graphics cards have long been familiar with these systems. It makes the job a lot easier. If a second or even third or fourth monitor is to expand on an existing system, there are other aspects to consider when choosing a new monitor.

What else comes into play when buying a new monitor?

Apart from quality, size, and price, there are several other aspects that come into play before you buy any monitor.
Existing connections

As already seen in our comparison, different monitors have a wide variety of connections. The most common are HDMI, VGA, DVI and DisplayPort. All the monitors we compared have at least one HDMI input. With other connections, the variations are sometimes very large. You can tell which connection you need by looking at the back of your computer or the side connections of your notebook. Here are the distinguishing features:
  • HDMI
HDMI stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface. HDMI has been in development since mid 2002. It is intended for digital image and sound transmission. The socket on a computer or notebook can be recognized by the fact that the socket on one side is wider than the other side. You know this principle from the USB port on a smartphone, only bigger. Modern graphics cards in computers are usually equipped with two to four such connections. A notebook usually only has one connection for an external monitor.
  • VGA
This connector is considered a Video Graphics Array. It's a bit outdated, but still very common. Next to the DVI connector, it is the easiest to spot. The socket on a computer or notebook is the female partner for the plug, the embedded 15-pin D-Sub mini plug. The color of the socket is usually blue. Plugs are also usually this color. However, this is not a standard condition and may deviate.
  • DVI
DVI stands for Digital Visual Interface and is the digital variant of the VGA connection. He is very easily distinguished from this externally. The sockets on a computer or laptop are slightly larger and are always white. There are five types of connectors in total, all of which are not necessarily compatible with each other. The manufacturer decides on the format provided, so this connection should not be a buying decision.
  • Display ports
This connection is the successor to VGA and DVI. Unfortunately, however, it's not really that interesting and is increasingly being replaced by HDMI. Therefore, most of the monitors in our comparison do not have a display port connection. The socket itself can only be distinguished from an HDMI connection by looking closely. This is a socket that only tilts at one angle. This ensures that it cannot be used the wrong way.

Built-in speakers on 27-inch monitor

27 inch monitors

When you're looking for a new monitor, you'll often come across models that already have built-in speakers. But be careful! These sound systems have one thing in common: They're all bad. Due to the compact and usually very flat design of monitors, loudspeakers are also made sparingly. Neither Dolby nor Surround allow you to do that. The deep, rich bass is also muted. Such speakers are in no way a substitute for a true PC sound system.

A self-respecting gamer can definitely do without these integrated speakers. Because most computer gamers use headphones or headsets. This allows communication with other players via Voice over IP. In multiplayer games, this is an indispensable thing. If you like listening to music on your computer, whether you're at work or playing games, you won't be satisfied with the sound of the monitor speakers either.

In short: When buying a monitor, you don't have to pay attention to whether it has integrated speakers. There's no way you can compare this to today's television. While the sound quality of modern flat-screen TVs is excellent, the sound from this system is disappointing. In our comparison, none of the 27-inch monitors caught the eye with such rich sound.

Advantages
  • At least basic sound is possible with the integrated speaker
  • Those who would otherwise only use headphones can benefit from the integrated speakers
Deficiency
  • The sound from the integrated speaker is minimalistic
  • Depth and bass are almost completely gone
  • The loudspeakers integrated into the monitor cannot replace a complete sound system
Monitor survives computer

PC monitors are usually not replaced as often as other hardware components. Therefore, choosing the right device becomes more important. For a gamer or someone who always demands the best from their computer, the typical PC half-life is two years. Monitors, on the other hand, are used longer. Components such as graphics cards or processors are not replaced because they are faulty, but for performance reasons. With monitors, things are very different. These can usually be used for years.

Before making a purchase, you should therefore consider how you prepare for this longer period. Devices are getting bigger and bigger, and so are the resolutions, of course. In the era of HD and 4K, you have to consider how far you can avoid introducing new technologies. Basically, it's like a TV in the living room: Only tech freaks will quickly mount a new TV on their four walls as soon as a new standard is introduced. The same goes for the monitor.

Proper care for 27 inch monitor

Even computer monitors are not safe from dirt. Dust, fingerprints and other debris ensure you no longer have the right perspective. But what to do? Of course, steel sponges or wire brushes should not be used. Needless to say, here are some tips to properly clean your computer screen:
  • The monitor must be turned off and disconnected from the power supply before cleaning. After 30 minutes cleaning can start
  • Sometimes a simple paper towel is enough to remove the dirt. However, if you use a handkerchief, make sure there is no layer of balm on it
  • Cleaning works best with a microfiber cloth. It is slightly moistened and wiped over the monitor without applying pressure
  • Glasses cleaning cloth can also be useful in this case
When dealing with larger stains, you should use a microfiber cloth along with a special TFT cleaner. You should spray the material onto the cloth and then transfer it to the top of the screen with light pressure . You can use a brush to clean nooks and crannies. But make sure the bristles are not too hard.

Mounting the monitor on the wall

Wall mounts are especially useful if you want to use multiple monitors at the same time. Two screens may still fit side by side on your desk. Especially when it comes to two identical models. However, if a third screen is added, having to be centered above the other two, for example, becomes difficult. For example, you can run movies and videos on a third monitor. This is where wall mounts come into play.

The wall mount is designed to mount the monitor to the wall at the correct height. It saves space and can be very flexible if wall mount allows. There are many different models on the market. With cheap models, you just hold the monitor against the wall. But no more. Slightly more expensive models allow you to pull the screen forward or turn it sideways.

The most expensive mounts allow rotation, tilt, and height adjustments. If the device is not needed, you can also play it completely. Or the monitor can be detached from the wall with a simple system including cable management.

There are three different standards for wall mounting:
  1. VESA MIS-D: This monitor has a 75x75mm or 100x100mm mounting hole pattern on the back of the device and is compatible with any mount.
  2. VESA MIS-E: Medium-sized display with a hole pattern of 200×100 millimeters and/or 200×200 millimeters
  3. VESA MIS-F: Large monitor over 31 inches with 400×200, 400×400, 600×200, 600×400 or 800×400 millimeters
All of the best 27-inch monitors we've compared have one thing in common: the base can be removed without a problem. You can then mount the device on the wall with the VESA MIS-D mount.
